Well, I'm happy to say that I've won Wex Mondays this year. Apparently that makes me some kind of award winning photographer...?
I found the whole thing quite surreal if I'm honest. Like the year before (where I came 2nd), this year kinda crept up on me. I had no expectations, no master plan except simply submitting images and keeping my fingers and toes crossed in the hope of getting a weekly win. Then, without me really thinking about it too much, I found myself in amongst the top 3, and thats when things got a little tense!
For the rest of the year most of the top 3 remained mostly unchanged. I hovered around 1st and 2nd on the leaderboard, and on the last week it was pretty much neck and neck. Waiting for the announcement of the weekly placing was pretty tortuous (thanks Wex!) but I managed to keep my mind on other things being busy with work that day. When the final placements were released by Wex I was lucky enough to have gained some additional points that allowed me to take 1st place overall that year by 40 points.
Competition was tough, with Mark Horton coming in at 2nd place overall - Week in, week out he produced some of the best macro shots I had ever seen, and occasionally threw in a cool landscape shot just to keep us all on our toes!
3rd place went to (the frighteningly consistent) Lee Acaster (2014 winner) who, much like Mark was one of the stand out photographers this year.
I've included links to both Mark and Lee's sites below, as well as links to some other photographers that I really like, if you have the time please check them out.
When the competition was over I was awarded a nice trophy (yay!), £1,500 in vouchers (double yay!). And to top the year off the lovely guys at Wex Photographic arranged a exhibition of all 50 weekly winning images at the Forum in Norwich.
The exhibition was great fun, though it was very strange being the centre of attention. Not sure I remember much of it, but I think I had a good time! It was certainly a highlight to meet and chat with some other photographers I had only known from Twitter.
So there we go. "Wex Photographer of the year 2015".
Some of my shots from the year.
A few shots from the exhibition. Taken a few days after the opening night. Apologies for the little boy in red. That's my son, Tom...who was so impressed with the quality of everyone's images he spent most of the time rolling around on the floor in shock!
